WHOAH IRONMAN! I hammered out this drawing while down in my little studio cave. (har har) I saw the movie on opening day the other day and I thought it rocked pretty damn hard. If you haven’t seen it, go now. Then you come and tell me that you can’t stop quoting it.I have to say this is my favorite drawing I’ve done…for just about anything. This is PRETTY MUCH how I see things in my head…and what I did differently that I’m going to do in all my work from now on is start using the flexibility of my brush. It’s actually a pretty crazy brush that can do a hell of a lot of different strokes.
Granted, I still love scratching away the wax, it’s a little quirk of mine. It’s almost therapeutic to scratch away the black ink…like unwrapping a present on Christmas! OH BOY WHAT IS IT! OH SHIT!…socks. Back on track, while scratching is always fun I actually held back on this piece and let the brush do most of the talking.
I actually find it more interesting that I didn’t really define anything. Take the eyes for example, I thought about it…and did a rough first and scratched them away but something didn’t feel right with it so I left them in. I think it was a good choice.
So in summary, I didn’t outline everything and I didn’t scratch as much but I did try to put my trademark tics in.
A good line that I heard in college was “it’s the man that makes the brush.” Now while I do agree with that, you also need to know what your brush can do for you, so thats why I say “Know your tools.” One day I’ll come up with a better retort to that haha.
I think the song I listened to while I was drawing this really played through and it’s actually kind of hilarious when you hear the steel drum solo and the look on his face, hahah…PRICELESS DAMN IT.
